A DeLorean, mini Marty McFlys with hoverboards and a past, present and future dress code. Louise and Tessa’s Back to the Future wedding at Clapham Holme Farm was bloody brilliant.
The film references ran right through the day, and their guests properly got stuck in. If I could time-hop back and photograph this one again, I absolutely would. What a day it was!
A wedding at Clapham Holme Farm in East Yorkshire
Clapham Holme Farm is in Great Hatfield, East Yorkshire. The Granary Barn and outdoor space gave Louise and Tessa plenty of room to make the day their own. Blue fabric looped across the beams, with bunting, pom-poms and decorated tables carrying that colour through the barn.
And they absolutely did. The car outside, the entrances, what everyone was wearing: this was a wedding built around something they loved. Loads of little references to spot as the day went on.

The DeLorean and a very good wedding entrance
Louise and Tessa beside the DeLorean, with their nieces and nephews dressed as little Marty McFlys, sums it up pretty well. Red bodywarmers, hoverboards and two smiling brides outside the barn. Such a good photograph to have from the day.
One of the children even made their entrance on a hoverboard. You can’t ask for much more than that! My job is to be ready for those moments as they happen, with an eye on the reactions around them too.

Past, present and future: a dress code people got behind
Their guests deserve some credit for that dress code. Vintage outfits, sci-fi silver and plenty of 80s references. They’d put the effort in, and it was brilliant to photograph.
That’s the thing with an idea like this: your people getting involved makes such a difference. Louise and Tessa gave them something fun to join in with, and everyone’s outfits brought another bit of personality into the day.
A blue dress, confetti and a lot of laughing
The blue ombré dress and bright blue shoes looked brilliant together, and the other bride’s trainers kept that blue-and-white colour scheme going. Then there were the little film references tucked around the venue, right down to the time circuits inside the DeLorean.
The ceremony photographs are full of grins, and outside the barn their guests lined up for confetti. I love having both in a gallery: the big themed photographs and the little looks between you when everyone else is getting involved.

Blue smoke and a wander through the fields
We had plenty to play with for their couple photographs. A few together beside the car, a sit inside with those gullwing doors open, then portraits by the greenery and out beside the fields. The blue smoke against the countryside looked unreal, especially with that dress.
There’s a lovely mix in these: a kiss, a laugh, a little twirl and the two of them walking together. Later, we caught that pink evening sky too. Loads of variety, while still looking like Louise and Tessa.

Enchantment Under the Sea, Yorkshire style
Inside, the Enchantment Under the Sea decorations carried the film theme into the reception. The speeches brought plenty of reactions, from heads thrown back laughing to a hug with one of the speakers. Then came the first dance and live music, with guests getting stuck in on the dance floor.
That’s a proper good way to round off a wedding like this. The theme was everywhere, but there was just as much to photograph in the people enjoying it.
Photographs that feel like your wedding
This is exactly why I love alternative wedding photography. Pick the things you’re excited about and go with them. There isn’t a particular outfit or colour scheme you have to tick off to make your wedding count as alternative.
The film details were a big part of Louise and Tessa’s wedding, so I wanted to photograph them properly. But I’m still looking for the people in between: the laughs, the reactions and everyone enjoying being there together.
If you fancy a few more ideas, have a look at Chloe and Aaron’s festival wedding at Pitch 21 or Amy and Callum’s colourful wedding at Social in Hull. Different weddings, plenty of personality and couples doing things their own way.
