A Relaxed Summer Wedding at Riverlands
Morning pizza, sunshine and a dance floor that absolutely went for it. Beth and Ben’s celebration at Riverlands Wedding Barn had such a good energy, and there was plenty to photograph from getting ready right through to the party.
They’d already married a few years earlier in a smaller, more intimate ceremony. This time, it was about bringing their friends and family together for the bigger celebration. A chance to get everyone in the same place, dress up and properly enjoy it.
And that’s a brilliant reminder if you’re planning something similar: your wedding celebration doesn’t have to happen all in one go. Beth and Ben had their own way of doing things, and this day was full of people getting stuck in.
The setting was Riverlands Wedding Barn in East Yorkshire, which some couples will remember as East Yorkshire Barns. Barn doors, open countryside and plenty of personality. A proper good combination.
Barn Doors, Countryside and Time Together
One of the things I like about photographing a barn wedding is the variety you can get within the same gallery. With Beth and Ben, there are the dark barn doors, the brickwork and timber, then those much more open views out across the fields. Each gives the photographs a different feel.
Against the black doors, the two of them really stand out. Ben’s blue suit, Beth’s dress and their expressions do the work, with a simple background keeping your eye on them. Out in the countryside, there’s more room in the frame: the grass, the sky and the two of them walking together.
You don’t have to choose between a few couple portraits and a gallery full of natural moments. I like having both. A little time together gives you photographs of just the two of you, while the rest of the day is full of the people you’ve brought along.

And the group photographs don’t all have to be sensible either. Beth’s bridesmaids in their green dresses certainly brought some energy to theirs, including lifting one of the group off the ground. Those are the photographs where everyone’s personality comes through. Bloody brilliant.
Pizza First, Wedding Preparations Second
Pizza in the morning is a strong start in my book. Alongside getting dressed and the finishing touches, there was time for food, drinks and everyone being together. The photographs include those little in-between bits as well as the obvious milestones: someone helping with a tie, the dress being fastened, people chatting and children doing their own thing.
That’s why I like photographing the preparations. It gives you a fuller picture of the day, including things you might not have seen while you were getting ready yourself. The small interactions deserve a place in the gallery alongside the big entrance.
A Barn Ceremony with Everyone Around Them
The ceremony photographs bring us into the brick barn, with its timber beams and rows of guests. There’s Beth coming down the aisle, Ben holding a little one and the two of them together at the front. It’s a lovely mix of the occasion itself and the family moments happening around it.
Already being married didn’t mean they had to skip having a celebration with everyone there. If you’ve had a small ceremony and are planning a bigger gathering later, I can photograph that too. Tell me what you’ve got planned and which parts matter most to you.
From the Speeches to a Proper Party
There was plenty happening after the ceremony too, including shots, group photographs and the reception. Inside, long tables sat beneath draped fabric and strings of lights, with flowers and glassware running along the tables. The gallery takes in those details as well as the people enjoying the space.
And then there’s the evening. The dance floor photographs are full of movement: arms in the air, guests laughing and people properly going for it. Beth and Ben’s day had already given me loads to work with, and the party added a completely different energy to the finished story.

Absolutely. Beth and Ben had already had a smaller ceremony and wanted a full celebration with family and friends. The people, the speeches and the party still deserve to be photographed, whether or not you are doing the legal ceremony that day.

We can choose a short slot around your plans and the light on the day. If there is good evening light, a quick wander later can work nicely too. You do not need to spend a large part of the celebration away from your guests.
